A Picture a Day : March 20 - March 26

March 20, 2011

I have held many things in my hands,
and I have lost them all;
but whatever I have placed in God's hands,
that I still possess.
~Martin Luther

So many of you have been asking how
our Jude is doing. So, for the record,
he is AMAZING :)
The surgeon did an incredible job and
Jude was such a sweet patient, hardly
fussing with all his dressings during the
healing period. His hand is completely
healed and other than looking strangely
at his scar a couple times a day (not
sure if he's actually wondering where
his thumb went or if the scar is maybe
still a bit sensitive?) he has fully recovered.
You can see in the picture how he grabs
things using his index finger - it's incredible
how right from the beginning he has
adapted to do whatever he wants.
Since he's not so great at high 'fives' anymore
we taught him how to do the fist pump.
It's pretty awesome.
He's pretty awesome :)

Mending on Mondays?

March 22, 2011
Little signs of spring are giving me hope...

March 23, 2011
...although today was a SNOW DAY!?!
Now, don't get me wrong, I love a good snow
day but I'm really.ready.for.spring.

So we all took turns wearing the moose hat.
Because how can you not have a good day when
you're wearing the moose hat?

March 24, 2011
These kids really love their bath.

March 25, 2011
When we were making our nightly rounds, we
found these two trouble-makers snuggled up
together in Silas' bed. Their shenanigans are cute
now, but I have a feeling these brothers are going
to be quite a precarious pair the older the get!

March 26, 2011
When I asked Gracie Jo what the yellow things
were she replied, quite pragmatically,
"They're for fashion, Mom."
Of course. For fashion.
Why didn't I know that?

This is the day the Lord has made.
We will rejoice and be glad in it!

Jude and the Scary Toothbrush

I've watched this half a dozen times today
and I laugh every time!! Maybe it's just
a mama-enjoying-her-babe thing, but
I hope you like it too!

Jude, you are too cute and, while you are so
incredibly brave about most things, I guess
this toothbrush was just too much for you!

Silas' prayer

This was Silas' prayer tonight. I don't want to forget these precious
words or the way he thinks about God and others right now. He is
such a special little guy with such a soft heart. I pray that Peter and
I can somehow protect this in him as he grows. ..

Father, give us wisdom as we raise your child
to be a godly young man, whose strength is gentle
and comes from an understanding of who he is because of you.
May he not lose his tenderheartedness and compassion
but be a great encourager and ambassador for the weak.

Lord, please take care of my friend, J,
because she can't see very good right now

and she's in the hospital.
Thank you that I don't have to sleep in a box tonight
instead of my bed.
Thank you that we have a house to live in
and take care of the kids in Haiti who don't have houses
and have to sleep in boxes.
And I want to be in heaven with you. Amen.
-Silas (age 4 1/2)

Little puzzlers

March 14, 2011
The boys in their new hats.
Spring is in the air - good bye toques, hello caps?
We'll see...

March 15, 2011
Of all the kids, Levi loves hanging out in the
barn with us the most. He especially loves
zooming up and down the feed alley on his
pink bike . He's just so cute!

March 16, 2011
"How can a nation be great if its bread tastes like Kleenex?"
- Julia Child

I started baking bread a few months ago.
Deeeeelicious!
Although, I think we all gained like 5 lbs. this winter.
Good for the kids...not so good for Pete and I.
*shrug*
Sometimes you just have to make sacrifices, y'know? :)

March 17, 2011
While big sister and brothers are playing in the big city
with Uncle George and Aunt Alex, Jude held down
the home base.
Cutest.. Transformer. Ever.
(although Levi wearing the whole suit and referring to
himself as Octopus Prime is a very close second!)

March 18, 2011
I think she picked up this move in the city?

March 19, 2011
Back in the barn.
Only 12 more days at this job.
So excited about what's ahead, but also feeling very
sentimental about the past two years here.
So thankful that I know Who holds our future...

Many are the plans in the mind of a man,
but it is the purpose of the LORD that will stand.
~Proverbs 19:21~

A Picture a Day: March 6 - March 12

March 6, 2011
My amazing sister-in-law is very wise.
She also handed down to me a SEWING MACHINE!
Coincidence? I think not :)

It was a special friend's birthday and I knew she
had been looking for some bookends. I figured owl's
(like my sistah) are known to be wise and knowledgeable,
and would be a good choice for bookends to hold up my
friend's vast array of classy, intelligent literature ;)
So, conjuring up the tricks I learned from Mrs. Frawley
when I made a pillow case in Gr.9 Home Economics,
I stitched up this sweet little darling (fellow?).
Once I finish the second, she'll have a perfect pair of hooters.
(sorry, I couldn't help myself )

March 7, 2011
Really?
I swept the floor Sunday afternoon and this is what
went in the dustpan this morning after breakfast.
Not even 24 hours, people! I think I'm going to invest
in one of those robotic vacuum cleaners that just zooms
around on its own. And leave it on all the time!

March 8, 2011
The beginning of Lent.
aka - Pancake Tuesday
aka - Fat Tuesday....ahem
That's okay.
We all know what kind of girls make the rockin' world go round ;)

March 9, 2011
Jude has discovered how to climb.
Now, whenever we leave the room, we come
back to find him on top of tables, chairs, in
windowsills, etc. I know we need to teach him
that this is not okay...but he's just so proud of
himself. And frankly, we are too!

March 10, 2011
The weather is so bad, the bus was over 20 minutes
late this afternoon. After the rain and almost spring-like
days on the weekend, this has been a bit of a kick in
the pants. Very thankful for these beautiful flowers from a
special friend. He always brings such joy to our home when
he visits. Thank you!!

Today was a snow day - WAHHOOOOO!!
Today was also the day that I had decided to tackle the
basement - BOOOOO!!!
People often comment, wondering 'How do I do it all?'
The easy answer is: I don't.
Our basement is a perfect example of this.
I never go down there. The kids occasionally do and
it literally is an explosion of toys and junk and mess.
It has been this way for months and months and months.
The above pictures were taken after spending
the whole morning down there cleaning.
I wish I had taken pictures at the very beginning.
You couldn't even see the floor.
Anyways, I'm very happy that this is finally
getting cleaned up - embarrassed that it
was SO bad for SO long and that it took us
having to pack up the house because we're
moving to finally clean it up - but I also know
that the things that happened while I wasn't
cleaning the basement were important too.
I guess that why I wanted this to be today's picture.
I want to remember this.
Because I know there will always be
something, actually a lot of somethings,
that I'm behind in. But we survived with
a messy basement. And even if I haven't cleaned
the oven in over half a year, we sometimes eat cereal for
supper, we're still using the bed sheets I put up as 'temporary
curtains' when we moved in (and now we're moving out) and
there are still carrots out in the garden, frozen in the
earth and buried under the snow...

We're okay.
And I can't do it all.
And that's okay.
(repeat this as many times as necessary)

March 12, 2011
Weekends don't have a lot of significance on the farm.
But now that Gracie Jo and Silas are in school,
weekends have become very special.
I love this picture. It was taken at 7:30 this morning.
The kids are still all snuggled on the couch in their pajamas.
We haven't had breakfast yet, because they're waiting
for Daddy to come in from the barn so we can have
breakfast as a family. And no one has to rush off anywhere.
I'm definitely smiling right now.

A Picture a Day: February 27-March 5

February 27, 2011
Our friends came over after church today.
Jude was starting to go downhill so spent
most of the afternoon getting his bum changed
or crying on my lap. All of the other kids (7 between
our two families) have spring fever, so they were absolutely
nuts. We could hardly talk sometimes it was so loud.
I'm glad we have friends who don't mind
sharing our crazy life right now.
Also, the above two boys are trouble makers and
just imagining the two of them 10 years from now
makes me nervous -but I say that with a big smile :)

February 28, 2011

I'll be honest.
Today was pretty crappy.
Figuratively,
and literally.

While Jude's hand is healing really well,
his sensitive digestive system is not
handling the drugs from the surgery and
the pain medication very well.
Plus he's cutting 3 big, fat molars.

We're on our second load of diapers.
Which means I've changed over 2 dozen
poopy diapers today.

Days like this used to be normal.
In January, Jude's doctor gave him
a new subscription which has pretty
much ended those days.
So I'm *trying* to be thankful that
this is not a normal day anymore.
But it's still hard
and I'm tired.

He also has a nice rash all over his body
(I think it's just another way his body is
dealing with the drugs & medication) so
we've been hanging out in the bath a lot too.
Thankfully, Jude is just like our other kids
and would spend the entire day in the tub
if I let him, so it's a good way to soothe him
and his poor, itchy skin.

But when Daddy comes home there's
always lots of smiles! He doesn't normally
make it in before bedtime, so it's extra-special
to get an armful of pajama-clad boefies.
Looking at this picture just makes my heart
burst. Such a good way to end a hard day.
Thank you, Lord!

March 1, 2011
We got collard greens in our produce crate this week
from the co-op. I've never had them before, but after
finding this recipe I was hesitantly excited.

Success!!!
(Although, I may have doubled the bacon and
halved the greens {sheepish grin})

March 2, 2011
The boys were watching some basketball after lunch.
Apparently, the little boys weren't overly enthused.

March 3, 2011
The boys were rough-housing and crashed into
the hutch which holds this figurine that Peter gave
to me. I'm not very sentimental about most things but,
as I watched the figures fall to the ground and the head
crack right off, my first reaction was to burst into tears...

...but, after quickly seeing that the break could easily
be fixed with some superglue, I had myself a good
little chuckle because I think this is probably a very
good depiction of how Pete actually feels some
days around here. LOL!!

March 4, 2011
Gracie Jo always loves having another
little girl around. She's been repeatedly
hinting about how great it would be
to have a sister...
(insert my eyes rolling here - ha!)

March 5, 2011
Levi's favorites right now (in no particular order):

superheroes
puzzles
geography

It was a good day for him.

------

God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear,
though the earth give way and the
mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their surging.
The LORD Almighty is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.

A Picture a Day: February 20-26

February 20, 2011
Visits at Oma's house always include bubbles...
even in February?

February 21, 2011
~Family Day~
I'll be honest, I was tired and grouchy this day.
And these pictures look fun, but when we were done
and the paint that said 'washable' on the bottles wasn't...
I *might have* sent Pete a text that said something like
"Painting with 'washable' paint that isn't, a crib, clothes
and baby covered in poo after nap time, and me being an
idiot and leaving groceries in the truck so they can freeze
and be ruined...can this day end already? Please??"
Anyways, I'm glad for these pictures because, looking
back at them now, they do make me smile. It's so easy to
miss out on the goodness when I pay more attention to
the messes and mistakes. (Note to self: remember this!)

February 22, 2011
'The Girls' sitting in the sunshine while their hair sets.
Gracie Jo is big into 'styling' these days :)

February 23, 2011
When a special friend found out Levi was allergic
to milk, she made him a package of dairy-free
chocolates for Valentines Day. As you can see,
he thoroughly enjoys them!

February 24, 2011
Surgery day for Jude :(

February 25, 2011
These flowers are helping keep things cheery around here.

February 26, 2011
Everyone's home and happy to be together again.
Things are quickly returning to normal...
Yep, perfectly normal...

I also changed Jude's dressings for the first
time today. I just about fainted (the wound
is healing really well, just way bigger than
I had thought it would be - Yipes!) but Jude
seems to think all this 'playing doctor'
business is, thankfully, real fun.

“The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, the education, the money, than circumstances, than failure, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company... a church... a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past... we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude.

I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me

and 90% of how I react to it.

-Charles Swindoll

Rejoice always;
pray all the time;
thank God no matter what happens.
This is the way God wants you who belong to Christ Jesus to live.
